What is a Blown Save?

There are a lot of terms in baseball that are confusing, simply because of the nature of the game. In baseball, so many things can happen that lead to so many other things happening. One of the terms most often asked about is a blown save.  If you follow any of the plays at MLBBaseballFreePicks.com, you know losing a bet like this can be really taxing to the mental state.

A blown save is not a good thing for the team on defense. It happens when the relief pitcher starts the inning with his team ahead but allows the tying run to score. For example, with the Cubs leading 2-1, the Cubs reliever may replace the starting pitcher when a Pirates runner is on third. If that runner scores, the Cubs starting pitcher is charged with the run, but the reliever is charged with a blown save.

To get this unfortunate distinction, the pitcher must be in a blown save situation. He can’t be the game’s starter, he has to pitch a minimum third of an inning, and he has to finish the game for his team. He also has to pitch an inning with his team leading by 3 runs or less or be brought in with the tying run on base, at bat or on-deck. Whew, did you get that?! There also used to be a rule that he had to pitch 3 innings, but with the various relievers, middle relievers and closers, that’s fallen by the wayside.

All is not lost after a blown save, however. The Cubs may score more runs, and the reliever may hold the Pirates scoreless for the rest of the game. Then, depending on various circumstances, the starter may get the win, or, in some cases, the reliever charged with the blown save may actually get the win. This usually happens when the starting pitcher goes out early, and, among multiple relievers, one is determined to be the most effective. If that’s the pitcher with the blown save, he’ll get the win.

The blown save stat was introduced in 1988. Its purpose is to evaluate relievers, and especially closers, whose job is to maintain the team’s lead through the final innings. Relievers and closers are judged effective by saves and not so effective by blown saves. But some save situations are more challenging than others; for example, a 1-run lead with runners on in the 7th is more precarious than a 3-run lead with bases empty in the 9th. So some people want to use a different stat called a meltdown, which would include losses caused by pitchers in non-save situations as well. For now, though, the blown save is the stat of choice.

What was the most famous or infamous blown save ever? It was probably the one that cost the Yankees the World Series in 2001. In Game 7, with the series tied 3-3, the Yankees were ahead 2-1 going into the eighth. What’s more, formidable closer Mariano Rivera was on the mound, so it looked like New York had the game well in hand; Rivera had 23 consecutive postseason saves. But in the ninth, Rivera gave up the tying run, then loaded the bases, and, after that, outfielder Luis Gonzales hit a walkoff bloop single to win the game for Arizona 3-2. With class, however, Rivera said, “I think it was the best World Series we ever played in.”

So a blown save is just one of the complexities of baseball that make it challenging and also fun. It’s part of the duel between pitcher and hitter. And, after all, the flip side of a blown save is some exciting offense.

What Is A Quality Start In Baseball?

A quality start in baseball is pretty easy to define, and you need to make sure that you know the parameters when you have a look at the scorecard for the game. The quality start has two main components, and you have to be sure that you have looked out for the two things that will make it a quality start.

Six Innings

A pitcher has to throw a complete six innings in a game to make it a quality start. That means that you are watching the game carefully, and it also means that you are going to be able to enjoy the game with the same pitcher for at least the six innings. The pitcher can definitely go over this allotment and still qualify, just not less.

The game could become a complete game if the pitcher finishes the game, but they will not get the quality start they were looking for if they have not held the opponent to under so many earned runs.

Earned Runs

The game cannot have more than three earned runs given up by the starting pitcher for the game. These two things make the game a quality start, and it is very important for the pitcher to know that they will be able to protect their team defensively on that level. You have to check to make sure that the earned runs were credited the right way on the scorecard, and you need to be sure that you have a chance to show that you have reached the right conclusion on the game.

What Does It Mean

The quality start is a very good statistic, and it is something that you need to be sure that you have the right stats for the game. The stats are going to tell you a lot, and you need to be sure that you know how many of the games that a pitcher threw in were quality starts. That is a big statistic now, and you have to be sure that you have done something that is going to help you learn about the game in a positive way. You will learn things about the game that you did not know, and you will be able to give a pitcher credit for the work that they have done. That means a lot for a pitcher, and it helps them learn about their own pitching.

A Comforting Stat

The quality start stat can be very comforting because it is something the pitcher can look to. There are some things that people are going to be able to learn from these starts, and that is going to teach you things about the game that you will be able to see. You have to remember that it is going to be hard to take care of the game and its stat, and you want to remember that it is going to be something you can tally for every game you watch. Tracking pitchers can be hard, but it can also be something that you do with your own players if you are a coach. The quality start is just one stat, but it is one that can really do something for you in the future. You deserve to have all the right stats on your favorite pitchers, and you have to be sure that you have really thought about the six innings and three earned runs so that there is no question.

Sacrifices in Baseball

Baseball is a game played on a field with four bases that take the shape of a diamond. The players are divided into two teams. Each team is expected to have nine players as the rules of the game state. Baseball is common in Canada, United States, East Asia and Latin America. Sacrifice is a term that is very common in this match. However, the same word can bring confusion to you. Let us discuss sacrifice and learn why it is appreciated.

When does sacrifice fly apply? It happens if at the time the ball is hit, the outs are less than two. A batter is usually credited for this kind of a sacrifice if he hits the fly ball that was caught though it was deep for the runner to score. A runner has also credited a sacrifice fly when he is on the base score. The reason why it is called a sacrifice fly is that the batters intentions are to make a player from his team make a score. While doing so, he is giving up his ability to make the score by himself. In the score boxes, a sacrifice fly is recorded using an “SF”.  Eddie Murray is the all-time leader in sacrifice flies.

Sacrifice hit and sacrifice hunt are used interchangeably to define a situation where a batter gets credit for this sacrifice if he advances runners as he bunts the ball. Forget a hit. Pitchers typically try and rack up sacrifice bunts when they are up.  This is because many of them are inaccurate in making a hit and are not able to advance a runner.

Since the year 1995, batters were never credited for sacrifice hit in any game. It was in the year 1908 when the sacrifice rule was instituted. Twenty-three years later, it was discontinued. Eight years after the discontinuation, this rule was adopted again. The following year, 1940 they eliminated the norm again. It took a period of fourteen years for the rule to be approved the last time. Since 1954 up to date, this rule has been practiced in all baseball games.

Five is the highest number of sacrifice flies that a team can be credited. Seattle Mariners established this record in the year 1988. In 2006, Colorado Rockies tied this record. Two years later, Seattle Mariners tried it all over again. The total number of teams that were able to get sacrifice flies are five. The sacrifices made were three.

Triple Crown in Baseball

When most people think of the Triple Crown, they think of horse racing. However, when a die-hard baseball fan hears the term “Triple Crown,” it means something else entirely. In Major League Baseball, the Triple Crown is an elusive title that has only been claimed seventeen times. It refers to an individual player finishing a season as the leader of the league in three batting categories: batting average, home runs, and runs batted in(RBI).

The MLB Triple Crown is a difficult title to earn because it requires the player to be a complete hitter that possesses strength in multiple areas of batting-skill, strength, and timing. The player must be able to hit the in play frequently in order to have a high batting averages, they must be able to hit the ball long distances in order to hit home runs, and they must be able to drive runners home by hitting when runners are on base. When it comes to runs batted in, there is also a little bit of luck involved as well:if there are no teammates on the base when the player goes up to bat, he can be as accurate and strong as possible, he still won’t get any RBI.

Miguel Cabrera

Miguel Cabrera, third baseman for the Detroit Tigers, is the most recent to win the Triple Crown. His 2012 achievement was the first since Carl Yastrzemski in 1967. There have been MLB players to receive the triple crown not once but twice, proving their excellence and expertise in batting. Former St. Louis Cardinal Roger Hornsby was the first the achieve the two-time Triple Crown, winning his first in 1922 and again in 1925. The second and last player the earn the achievement twice was Ted Williams with the Boston Red Sox, who won it in 1942 and 1947.

The Triple Crown has became more difficult to achieve and occurs less frequently than it did in the early 1900s. Because of the increase of number in teams from the beginning of MLB, there are more players in the league, creating more competition. Another reason we rarely see a Triple Crown anymore is because rather than focusing on being a batter with strength in every area, players now focus more on specialization in either home runs or batting average.

Because many of today’s fans recently witnessed the Triple Crown being achieved, we wonder if we will ever see it again. Though it is unlikely, nothing in the world of professional sports, especially baseball, is impossible.
